Does anyone have any tips for light-proofing a tent (without blocking airflow)? I've been exploring covering the air vents with the wooly matting that garden centers use to line the shelves that they keep potted plants on. It takes four layers to make it effectively opaque (when pressed against a bright lamp). It seems to still let plenty of air through, but I'm waiting for a tent and fan to arrive, so I can test things properly. I'm getting a HomeBox Ambient, which have round vents that make it easy to tuck a few layers of matting in there, so I can easily try different things. If there was a simple cover that kept direct sunlight off of the vent, you wouldn't need four layers of the matting. You can get similar matting material with activated carbon (which is used for carbon filters in cooker hoods). It wouldn't replace a conventional carbon filter, but could be useful in some cases. It's inexpensive, but I have no way to measure how effective the filtering is, so can't meaningfully try it. You can also get round plastic cans (as cooker hood carbon filters), which might permit unused duct-vents to be repurposed as opaque air vents. Even if the carbon filtering is ineffective, it'd just be nice to let the air flow without the light getting in.

I used to grow back in the day (well, about 15 years ago), and recently started looking into the hobby again. I’ve been especially pleased by how friendly and helpful the companies have all been. Spider Farmer, Pure Sativa and Living Soils have all been great. The community has also been as awesome as ever. Happy to be back.

I'd like to use living soil, but need to keep the pots relatively small to stop the plants growing too big. The issue is that you cannot maintain a healthy soil ecology in small pots for very long. I'm considering maintaining a large bay of living soil (downstairs), with a small light and some cover plants, where soil can rest and be amended. Then every few months, till it, take enough to refill my little pots, then break up the roots (from the last run) and return them to the bay, tilling it again before planting new cover seed. Rotating the soil would be more flexible, as there are amendments you could make in the bay that are not viable when you're growing plants in the pots, amendments are time-buffered, and the bigger the bay (relative to the pots), the more rest the soil would get. You could maybe "micro compost" certain things (tealeaves, paper pulp etc), and keep worms and stuff. This approach would also lower the cost of entry. You could just buy enough soil for your first grow, and buy some more for the next grow, with a bit extra to mix your roots into, so you could accumulate and build your own soil over time, growing the size of your 'recovery bay' as the soil accumulates. The amendments are inexpensive - you can buy a complete set for about twenty-five quid. My concern is that the microbes in the soil would be so unhappy in such small pots (I'm thinking two liter Air Pots, for example) that the soil may not even stay healthy till the end of the grow cycle. The impression I get is that the soil would be fine for some months in small pots, but will become depleted if it's kept there much longer, but I'm not sure that's true. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, if anyone here knows much about this side of things?? I emailed info@livingsoilsfertiliser.com to ask if the principle is at least sound, and will update here if they reply with any information. Their range looks nice and is UK based, so I would probably go with their products too (bit pricey, but hopefully that reflects the quality).

I was convinced that fabric pots would work as well as Air Pots, then saw everyone that had any experience say the opposite, including growers and farmers, so I'm pretty much sold on the idea. With such a valuable plant, it seems like false economy to scrimp on pots. So bloody expensive though :( I've seen farmers making their own versions, and you can never really rely on a patent to prevent somebody inventing something close enough to create the same effect, so it seems like slashing the price and churning out reams of the stuff (which is essentially just a sheet material) would be better for everyone in the long run. I'm not holding my breath, obviously. It just seems to be pitched liked a niche Kickstarter product, when it seems like it could be mass produced in factories around the world. I don't get it.

I haven't used the equipment, so can only go off of reviews and stuff like that (for what it's worth), but Spider Farmer seem to be everything that MarsHydro claims to be, but never quite lives up to.

@green-fingers - Well done with the site. It very well made, especially for something so new. Nicely done, chap. One thing though, the server is quite slow. Can I ask, how is the site hosted?

I really like the way this site is implemented, though a darkmode would be extra nice. P.S. If you open a file picker to upload something, then hit Escape or Cancel, the site has a bug that prevents you from posting until you attach a file.

Happy to see this place is up and running. UK420 is very poorly implemented, and has no encryption (at all). I was thinking about building something like this myself, but if this site already has it all covered, I'm happy to just hang out here.
